Meditation can have a stronger analgesic effect of morphine, according to new research.
The researchers found that just one hour of training in meditation reduces physical pain by nearly half and has long lasting effects.
“This is the first study that shows that one-hour meditation can dramatically reduce both the experience of pain and pain-related brain activation.” Said Dr. Fadel Zeidan of the Medical Center in North Carolina.
For the purposes of the study, 15 healthy volunteers who had not practiced meditation, attend four 20-minute sessions aimed at learning the technique of focused attention.
Brain activity of the participants was measured both before and after meditation training. The volunteers caused a mild sensation of pain for a period of 5 minutes.
The test results after training in meditation showed a 11-93% lower levels of perceived pain on each participant.
At the same time, meditation significantly reduced brain activity in the primary somatosensory cortex – the area that is associated with creating the feeling of where and how strong the pain.
The study shows that meditation increased brain activity in areas such as Cingular anterior cortex, anterior cingulum and orbit-frontal cortex.
“We found a large effect of meditation – intensity of pain decreased on average by 40% and by 57% reduces the unpleasant feeling of soreness.” Says Dr. Fadel Zeidan.
It turns out that meditation is actually more effective in reducing the feeling of pain than even morphine and other painkillers, which usually reduce it by about 25%.
